Signing Off and Turning Over My Duties

3/25/2022

It has been my pleasure to be part of the Alamo Battalion for the past three years. The opportunity to help motivated young people build their futures is a gift that I will always treasure. An unexpected bonus was getting to know some of the best people in America: the Sailors and Officers of the United States Navy.

My wife has taken a position at Texas A&M University in College Station, and we are moving there from San Antonio. I will therefore be stepping aside as PAO of the Alamo Battalion, and will be replaced by Tony Amesquita, a US Navy Seabee Veteran, and co-founder of VFW Post 12171. INST Amesquita is be a great addition to the Alamo Battalion, and

August Drill Update

8/11/2021

As of now, we are still on for drill 21-22 AUG. LT Heinen has an exciting training program set up with the Hospital Corpsman A-School at Ft. Sam, with a lot of hands-on activities.

Cadets and Parents are reminded to join the Facebook group for updates. Cadets should also be registered on Remind with the unit and their squad; Facebook has the details.

Since this is the first time we will use the NOSC in a long while, make sure that you send your information to us to get you on the base access list, if you don't have DoD ID.

We're looking forward to seeing everyone at drill. Let's keep our fingers crossed regarding the COVID situation.

April Drill In-Person!

4/12/2021

We are excited to be meeting in person for April Drill. Current Cadets should follow the instructions on our Shutterfly site.

For prospective cadets:
We are meeting on Saturday, April 17, 2001 at Mission Espada, 10040 Espada Rd, San Antonio, TX 78214, This is NOT an overnight drill.

Prospective cadets should report to Mission Espada promptly at 0815. The unit will be leaving at 0845 on a two-mile march to Mission San Juan. Your child will not need everything in the Prospective Cadet Visit Guide, because this is not an overnight visit. Have them wear appropriate and comfortable shoes and a ball cap. Sneakers should be fine. We will not be picky about clothing, but whatever your children wear should be neat and not bear inappropriate illustrations or messages. If you have a camelbak or similar hydration pack (required equipment if you join), or an easily wearable canteen, please have your child bring it filled with water. They will get thirsty as they march in formation with our cadets to Mission San Juan.

Please bring $15 in cash in an envelope with your child's name written on the outside of the envelope. This "drill fee" offsets our cost of supplies and food for the cadets.

We have activities planned at Mission San Juan for the cadets, followed by an awards ceremony for current cadets at 1415 (2:15 PM).

Pick up will be at Mission San Juan, 9101 Graf Rd. San Antonio, TX 78214. at 1500 (3:00 PM).

If you are planning to attend, please follow the instructions regarding the first four pages of the application form found at How to Join. Make sure to email alamobnpao@gmail.com to tell us that you are planning to attend.

Signs of Spring

3/18/2021

Not only is it literally almost Spring, but the Sea Cadet program is showing signs of coming out of its COVID pandemic enforced hibernation. NHQ has begun sharing information about the summer training season, so this is a good time for cadets to start figuring out for which ATs they want to register. It is also a great time for prospective Sea Cadets to join us.

We are working on ensuring that we have a place to drill in April, May and June. We are also making sure that any new cadet recruits have a chance to attend an in-person RT this summer. Expect more information soon.

For now, keep doing your coursework, keep practicing for your PRTs (no pass, no training registration), and finish your school year strong.

A video briefing parents on the summer training season is below, and I highly recommend it for all cadets and their families.

COVID, COVID, COVID

1/26/2021

The news could be better. COVID cases continue to be very high in San Antonio, stressing the local healthcare system, and damaging the local economy.

The Alamo Battalion is very fortunate to have active duty Sailors make up most of our volunteers. Unfortunately, the Navy is their first boss, and to protect the health of those Sailors and their San Antonio shipmates, the Alamo Battalion is unable to drill in person for at least three months.

The news may change and get better, or as we have seen, it could get worse.

We will be staying in touch with Cadets via virtual drills. Cadets should knock out those training courses as well so that they can advance in rate.

As of now, we have no official news concerning Summer Advanced Training or Recruit Training.

We ask prospective Cadets and their families to remain patient. We really want you to join us, but only when it is safe for you do do so. We are be unable to welcome prospective Cadets until we can safely meet in person again. Please check the website for updates. If we learn anything more, we will share it with you at that time.

Stay healthy! Stay fit!
